Yep, there is a someone underneath that blanket. This is an example of the “hidden mother” technique in photographing babies. The link above is an entire Flickr group dedicated to this bizarre 19th century photography phenomenon!
From Accidental Mysteries:
“You see, most infants during that time were photographed with their mothers holding them. The intended picture was ultimately headed for a frame or mat, so the child would sit in the mothers lap for the photo. When the picture was taken, the mother simply was cropped out to serve as the backdrop.”
Found my Ciccone Youth’s Whitey Album lp today. Fun trivia - when Kim Gordon and Mike Watts covered ‘Into the Groove’ Madonna’s managment team wanted to sue Sonic Youth. Madge didn’t let them because she was dating a mutual friend. Who? Michael Fucking Gira!! The founder/mastermind of (one of my very favorite bands) Swans!
My awesome girlfriend who totally gets my Elvis obsession bought me a really cool new Elvis book yesterday. We listened to my Sun Sessions lp and flipped through pictures of the cutest man ever.
Best Christmas song of all time ever. Most Cristina songs are hilarious, but this one is particularly wonderful. It was produced by Don Was of Was (Not Was), which is not particularly important or a particularly good band, but I use to get down to “Walk the Dinosaur” when I was a kid.
